Banjo Assault
The Streets of Northampton, Volume #1
Autumn

Several years ago through the work in my podcast (tomcreanguitarjournal.com) an interest in performing in public spaces developed. Naturally, as I have a tendency to enjoy non-traditional uses of documenting my work, this seemed to be a logical extension. However it took many years to truly find a concept that I felt was strong enough to exist without the mere novelty of public performance. This document is the first manifestation of work in this area.
The Compositions:
Over the past year and a half, my podcast has switched from one of an improvisational nature to one of composition. At first these compositions were fairly quick and mostly not very good. Through time I have developed two series of compositions that form the compositional basis of this CD Traditionalism and Untitled Poems. As of recent work has started towards a third series of compositions called Studies, but these are very recent developments, and exist solely within the realm of my Guitar Journal project, for now.
Traditionalism, as described in the score: An exploration of traditionalism in the genre that has become known as “jazz.” These composition are inspired by Charlie Parker and other masters of bebop music compositions utilizing alternative melodies to classic standards of their day. From this new improvisational possibilities gradually evolved. These compositions are composed using this adherence to form and the juxtaposition of Mr. Crean’s musical language in order to find a fresh springboard to compositional interplay.
Untitled Poems genesis began in the later part of the Traditionalism compositions. Gradually an inclusion of a poetic element began to emerge in Traditionalism. The idea came to me as a set of compositions composed in the classic greek style of music and poetry were the music and or the words could come and go and become symbiotic. Included in this collection is words and music and some compositions of a pure poetic nature leaving whatever (if any) musical accompaniment up to the performers.
Included improvisational passage is various musical dialogues with pedestrians, nature, etc and our reaction as performers. These compositions very much are collaborative and all members of this ensemble deserve credit to their creation.
The Setting:
Northampton Massachusetts has a tradition of street performers. Rarely would one walk the streets downtown without seeing one. Instead of performing on the main street, we choose to perform right behind main street in back of Thornes market. This to me was the logical choice, as it was accessible but not in the middle. It merely was.
We performed six Thursday mornings in the fall 2011, and once in August. All of the performances were recorded. After, I edited them and made them into a continuous “performance” or tape music track in the spirit of the entirety of the project. The video composition That’s a Winner comes from one of the sessions that I didn’t include in the CD.
As there is a lot of banjo, I decided to name this ensemble Banjo Assault. It seemed fitting.
